Lot Essay

The present cup and saucer was likely made to commemorate the birth of the Dauphin of France, first-born son to Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette on 22 October 1781. The motto is that of the Light Horse company of the Dauphin, founded in 1663. It translates from the Latin as The Game is Dangerous.
