Lot Essay

The unusual medallion of a 'Roman worthy' can also be found on a side table probably acquired by Joseph McGrath (d. 1769) for Cabinteely House, Co. Dublin and sold Christie's house sale, 5-6 November 1984, lot 99 (The Knight of Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven, 2007, p. 233, fig. 119 and color plate p. 220); and a writing cabinet from Glin Castle, made for Sir Richard St George (1718-1789) of Woodsgift, Co. Kilkenny and sold Glin Castle: A Knight in Ireland; Christie's, London, 7 May 2009, lot 56. The satyr mask legs compare to a drop-leaf table, also from Glin, lot 94 in the sale.
