Lot Essay

The shape of the present vase takes its name from the monumental marble excavated in 1771 from Hadrian's Villa in Rome. It was acquired by the noted English collector Sir William Hamilton, restored, and sold to the Earl of Warwick. It is now in the collection of the Glasgow Museum, Scotland. See H. Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain, 1783-1840, London, 1978, p. 173, pl. 110 for a similar vase.
