TWENTY-FOUR MESOPOTAMIAN CYLINDER SEALS
THE WEDDELL COLLECTION OF NEAR EASTERN SEALS (LOTS 5-10) Formed during travels across the Near East in the 1960s and 1970s, the Weddell collection of seals is remarkable for its extraordinary range, as it encompasses examples from the Late Uruk (circa 3300 B.C.) to the Sasanian Period (circa 642 A.D.), and stands as a testament to a private collector's passion for the genre. The first part of the collection was offered at Christie's on 11 July 1990.

Including one pink-grey with drill holes; one of red stone with concave edges; one of grey stone with stylized vessels; one of black serpentine with seated women; one of grey stone with four seated women; one of green serpentine with four seated women; one of grey stone with two seated and two standing women; another of grey stone with seated women; one of brownish grey stone with two registers of fish; one of reddish stone with three registers with a temple facade, two 'eyes' and two ovals; one of grey stone with linear decoration; one of cream stone with ovals with radiating lines; one of grey stone with linear and 'eye' decoration; one of brown serpentine with linear decoration; another of green-brown serpentine with net decoration; one of white stone with geometric design; another of white stone with net pattern; one of grey stone with linear decoration; one of cuprite with two caprids and snakes(?) above; one of grey serpentine with two caprids; one of green serpentine with a caprid before a temple; one of cream stone with star; one of cream steatite with eagle with outstretched wings; and one of grey stone with long-horned caprid
