Lot Essay

For similar seals with two figures of Gayomard cf. A. D. H. Bivar, Catalogue of Western Asiatic Seals: Stamp Seals: The Sassanian Dynasty, The British Museum, London, 1969, pp. 59-60, pl. 6, BG1-3.

It has been suggested that the figure with a lion could be Daniel in the lion's den, cf a similar garnet stone with a draped figure between two lions in A. D. H. Bivar, op. cit., p. 66, pl. 8, CG8. Also cf. C. J. Brunner, Sasanian Stamp Seals in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1978, p. 76, no. 8, described as 'tamer of lions'.
