P. Heesen, Athenian Little-master Cups, Amsterdam, 2011, no. 82.
For Xenokles, cf. J. D. Beazley, 'Little-Master Cups', Journal of Hellenic Studies, vol. 52, part 2, 1932, p. 167-204, and J. D. Beazley, Attic Black-Figure Vase-Painters, Oxford, 1956, pp. 184-86.
There are 41 known cups and fragments bearing Xenokles' epoiesen signature (P. Heesen, Athenian little-master cups, dissertation, 2009, p. 41), all of which are band or lip-cups. Many Little-Master cups boast potters' signatures; as J. D. Beazley notes (JHS, p. 194), 'in the little-master cup, and especially in the lip-cup, they are an integral part of the total design'. Notably, the majority of the Xenokles signatures appear to be by a single hand (P. Heesen, ibid, p. 43). Of these signed works, eleven are decorated only with his signature, as here. Beazley (ibid, p. 197) rather disparagingly characterised his writing as 'hasty, with tendency to backhand and to rounded corners'.
