Ovoid in form, the slender body decorated in relief with two registers of tongues, separated by a horizontal band of fluted guilloche around the front shoulder, lower part of the voluted handles and upper part of the foot with curved tongues

Lot Essay

The loutrophoros is a Greek vase shape distinguished by its ovoid body, elongated neck and two handles, which was used during wedding and funeral rituals. During the 5th and 4th Centuries B.C. monumental marble loutrophoroi were used as a memorial to the dead in the form of a monumental marble vessel. Many of them were found in the Kerameikos at Athens.
