Each quail is naturalistically carved with its legs tucked under the full body, beside branches of millet. The semi-translucent stone is of mottled apple and emerald-green tones.

Quails are known for their courage, while the word for quail in Chinese, an, provides a homophone for the word for peace. The combined imagery of the quails and millet forms the auspicious phrase, sui sui ping an which may be translated as 'peace for all'.
