Lot Essay

'Marriage' bowls decorated with auspicious symbols, as found on the current lot, were very popular at the Imperial Qing court, reflecting the wealth and status of their owners. The decoration on the current bowl is imbued with auspicious emblems, including the image of two catfish. The characters for 'catfish', nianyu in Chinese, represent the wish for abundance and prosperity year after year.
