Lot Essay

The current brush pot is a very fine example of a scholarly piece imbued with auspicious symbols. Bamboo and pine are two of the Three Friends of Winter, Suihan sanyou. Bamboo represents resiliance and adaptability while pine alludes to longevity. The tranquil scene is typical of the subjects depicted on scholarly subjects, transporting the owner to an idyllic mindscape.

Also compare the present lot to a brush pot of similar size and decoration which sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 31 May 2010, lot 1899.
