A MOTTLED GREEN JADE 'ELEPHANT AND BOY' GROUP
17TH CENTURY
The elephant is carved standing four-square with its trunk curled to the right and its head lowered, with a saddle-cloth covering its back. The boy is depicted holding a stick, and reclining on the back of the elephant. The stone is of a mottled dark green tone with areas of brown inclusions.
3¼ in. (8.2 cm.) wide

Please note: This lot has a later-added four-character inscription to the base reading chun xi yu zhi, meaning 'imperially made in the Chunxi year', which refers to the Chunxi era of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).
