A CARVED COCONUT SHELL CENSER AND COVER
18TH CENTURY
The censer is of globular form with a pair of monster-mask handles to the sides. The exterior of the censer is carved in low relief with a wide stylised taotie band between two narrow bands of striding dragons against a ground of waves. The top of the cover is decorated with a band of small shou characters encircling a flattened dragon finial. The interior of the cover and the base of the censer are both carved with shou character roundels. The interior of the censer is fitted with a gilt liner.
