Lot Essay

Nearly all examples of this lidded jar are decorated with bold carved brush strokes in iron oxide over cobalt, for regular production. The shape is almost certainly derived from a Chinese 14th century example. For similar examples see Bernard Leach, The English Potters, The Listener magazine, 2nd January 1947, and The Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Bernard Leach, (Tokyo, 2012), p.102.

A similar example was sold Christie's London, 7th November 2012, lot 81.
