Lot Essay

Tony O'Malley (1913-2003), born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, is one of the most admired Irish artists without formal training. He was a banker until the late 1950's and painted only for his personal enjoyment. A significant turning point came when he moved to St Ives in 1960 where he lived for the next thirty years. This period is considered to be the most productive era of his artistic career. He later returned to Ireland where he passed away in 2003.
