After studying in Glasgow, Antwerp and Paris he settled for most of his life near Oban in Scotland. However he spent several years working abroad including in Brock, Canada where he was present for their centenary celebrations in 1913. From there he appears to have travelled via New York to Australia arriving in Sydney on the R.M.S. Marama. After travelling around the country he moved to Perth in 1917, and was the President of the West Australian Society of Arts from 1920-21. One of his most celebrated commissions was of Captain H.V.Throssell, the first Australian winner of the Victoria Cross in the First World War.
