James Fletcher was the son of the Rev. Edward Fletcher. Born in 1768, he was at one time a physician in the service of the East India Company, Kishnegur, Bengal.
The present miniature appears to be after a miniature by William Wood though the original has not yet been identified. In the Memorandum of Miniatures painted and finished by William Wood, of the Royal Academy 1790-1808, London [unpublished manuscript in the Victoria & Albert Museum], there are references to a Mr Jas. Fletcher (nos 5855 and 5938). One of these miniatures could be the original after which the present work was copied.
