Lot Essay

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1767-1820) was the fourth son of George III and Queen Charlotte. Although created Commander-in-Chief of British forces in North America, and Governor of Gibraltar, the Duke of Kent's military career was a disappointing one, and he retired at the age of 35. After the death of his niece, the heir to the throne, Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817, the Duke of Kent left his mistress of over 25 years in order to marry Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and provide a new royal heir. Princess Victoria (later Queen) was born in 1819. The Duke of Kent died of pneumonia less than a year later, on 23 January 1820.
