A STANDING SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF ZHANG GUOLAO
18TH CENTURY
The Immortal is finely carved with a long beard and a smiling expression and wears a scholar's cap above pendulous ears. His long flowing robes are incised with dragon roundels, Xi characters and fruiting peach. He holds a large bamboo drum in his hands. Traces of pigment remain. The stained hexagonal soapstone stand is incised with rectangular cartouches enclosing stylised waves, lotus, clouds and a dragon and is further embelished to one side with a pierced jade florette.
