Joshua Watson was born in 1771 in London and from the age of ten trained as, and became, a successful banker. However, he was better known for his religious and philanthropic work, he was associated strongly with the Oxford movement and was a founder of the Church Building Society. During the Napoleonic Wars Watson was the Secretary of the Westminster Association for German Sufferers, providing grants for the relief of widows, orphans and others within the kingdoms and states of Germany. For this work he is believed to have been given the jewel by Frederick William III of Prussia (see p.91 Memoir of Joshua Watson).
