Second edition. Influenced by the work of Thomas Gouge, Firmin opened a workhouse to employ 'the poor' in the manufacture of linen, paying up to 1700 souls the sum of 6d for a sixteen-hour day (the going rate at the time). The scheme never broke even and Firmin covered the costs himself. RARE. Goldsmiths' 2435; Wing F-972.
