Appendix, 'Mill'd Lead demonstated', in two leaves 2°, folded and inserted at end. (Both leaves of the table cleanly torn, one repaired, some headlines shaved and numerals cropped away, f10-12 misbound before F4, burn-hole in B3 and C8 affecting a few letters, B8v and C1r slightly soiled.) Early 19th-century diced calf, spine gilt, marbled edges (spine restored, upper joints cracked, edges rubbed). Provenance: early 19th-century annotations -- Philips (bookplate) -- R.E. Scott, presented to the Institution of Naval Architects (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION including the first printing of Petty's 'Treatise of Naval Philopsophy'. Neither ESTC nor Keynes call for the 2-leaf appendix on the low cost of milled lead compared to cast, which is also found in one of the ULC copies. Dated London, 20 November 1695, it ends with the statement: 'This printed sheet may be had at Mr. Hale's house, the Lead-Mill, or at any the booksellers shops above-named, gratis.'
