FIRST EDITION. The majority of essays in both volumes are on political topics, though the first contains a number on polite behaviour (most of which Hume dropped from later editions); and one essay presents the study of history as particularly suitable for women. The second volume also includes four essays on philosophical types, a substantial essay on the rise and progress of the arts and sciences, and a short but timely character of Sir Robert Walpole. Rothschild 1172.
