WEST, Edward (bap. 1782, d. 1828). Price of Corn and Wages of Labour with observations upon Dr. Smith's, Mr. Ricardo's, and Mr. Malthus's Doctrines. London: John Hatchard, 1826. 8° (231 x 139mm). Folding lithographic chart. Uncut in original boards (spine rather worn). Provenance: Tweedale (signature on pastedown; armorial bookplate) -- copious pencil marginalia in another hand.
FIRST EDITION. Though written in India, West's work is considered 'remarkably up-to-date in its deployment of recent accounts of distress in the British manufacturing districts'. He used this evidence to produce a demand theory, based on the consumption of the manufacturing classes, which was the alternative to Smithian, Malthusian, and Ricardian price and wage theory (see ODNB). Goldsmiths' 24816; Kress C.1813.
