MINERVA PRESS -- WALKER, George (1772-1847). The House of Tynian. A Novel. London: William Lane at the Minerva Press, 1795. 4 volumes, 12°. With half-titles and advertisement leaf at end of vol. IV. (Occasional small stains.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (lightly rubbed, slight flaking of spines). Provenance: Beaufort (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of this scarce title from the Minerva press. Walker wrote numerous Gothic novels in the manner of Ann Radcliffe. The Critical Review (vol. 15, 1796, p. 342) considered this one far from a bad effort, praising the author for showing 'some discrimination and knowledge of the human heart ... a humane and liberal manner of thinking in the occasional reflections, and much ingenuity in disentangling the lovers from the embarrassments in which he has involved them'. ESTC lists only 12 holdings, no previous sale is recorded on AE. Blakey p. 170; Block p. 247; Summers p. 361.
