Contemporary straight-grained maroon morocco, wide gilt border on sides enclosing a fine decorated blind-stamped border with a few gilt dots, blind-stamped arabesque with a few gilt dots at centre of sides, flat gilt spine (corners rubbed). Provenance: Emily Mercer, Marchioness of Lansdowne (1819-1895; bookplate).
The verse by Tyrtaeus (middle of the seventh century BC) is in Didot's French translation and treats of the second Messenian War, as is that of Callinus of Ephesus (seventh to sixth century BC) who endeavours to rouse the indolent Ionians to a sense of patriotism, especially against the Magnesians.
