HEIDELHOFF, Nikolaus von. The Gallery of Fashion. London: N. Heidelhoff, April 1794- January 1800. 65 parts in 6 volumes (of 9) bound in 2 volumes, 2° (c.305 x 240mm). 5 (of 6) allegorical title pages and 131 aquatints by and after Heidelhoff, all hand-coloured. (Lacking the illustrated title for volume 5, some marginal soiling, a few tears some of these repaired, one plate in April 1798 torn with some loss and repaired.) Full red morocco by Riviere and Son, spines gilt in compartments, sides with gilt French fillet, gilt turn-ins. Provenance: George Mercer Nairne (bookplate).
THE FINEST AND MOST LUXURIOUS COSTUME BOOK PUBLISHED UP TO ITS DATE IN ENGLAND, and the first notable periodical publication in this country devoted entirely to changing fashion in dress. Heidelhoff intended to showcase the restraint and purity of English taste, in contrast to the extravagance of French fashion: 'in our memory France has given her dresses to the other nations; but it was reserved for the Graces of Great Britain to take the lead in Fashion' (Advertisement, vol. 2). Probably no more than 500 copies were published of each part. This set comprises a nearly complete run from the first issue in April 1794 until January 1800, lacking only issues for August 1797, and January, February, March and June 1798. Abbey, Life, 218; Colas 1170; Hiler, p.351; Lipperheide 4578; Ribeiro 109-110; Tooley 258.
