Lot Essay

The elegant design of these side chairs, in the English taste, is related to a design made popular by Hepplewhite & Co. in their Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. A further similar design for these chairs was published in the Magazzino di Mobilia o Sieno Modelli di Mobili di Ogni Genere, no. 1, November 1976. A further related suite of painted side chairs in the 'English taste' was sold from the Collection of Donna Marcella Traballesi, Nobili della Scala, Palazzo della Stufa, Christie's, Florence, 3-4 October 1995, lot 254.
