Please note that this lot is sold with a white marble circular socle and the column featured with Lot 285 in the printed catalogue. An old break and repair to the lower edge of the helmet and wing has reoccurred and will be fixed at Christie's expense and arrangement.

This bust is after the head of Canova's great marble statue of Perseus in the Vatican that was first shown in 1801. Based freely on the Apollo Belvedere, which had been carried off to Paris under Napoleon, Perseus was bought by Pope Pius VII and placed upon the pedestal where the Apollo had formerly stood.
