Lot Essay

1759, the 'Annus Mirabilis' or 'The Year of Victories' was the turning point for Britain during the Seven Years War (1756-1763). Victories had been won on land at Quebec and Minden and at sea at Lagos and Quiberon Bay, where Admiral Hawke had annihilated the French fleet in a rising gale, thereby ending the threat of a French invasion.
