Lot Essay

Laid down at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth on 29t<\sup>h<\sup> November 1909 and launched on 6t<\sup>h<\sup> August 1910, H.M.S. Lion served as the flagship of the Grand Fleet's battlecruisers during the Great War and was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Beatty at both the battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland. She is seen here undertow by H.M.S. Indomitable after being badly damaged by shellfire at the battle of Dogger Bank, 24t<\sup>h<\sup> January 1915.
