A BURMESE LACQUERED WOOD CHESS SET
POSSIBLY LATE 18TH CENTURY
The royal pieces shown on one knee and each holding two swords, the bishops as elephants, the black bishops with mahouts, the knights equestrian, the rooks as temples, the pawns as warriors shown on one knee, each piece applied with paper label to the base, some inscribed and dated 'ON LOAN FROM Lt Col. Maissey, Feb 13 1866
The king -- 4¼ in. (10.8cm.); the pawn -- 3in. (7.5cm.) high
