Lot Essay

The present picture belongs to a group of similar barn interiors with slaughtered animals on stacks, by both Isaac and his brother Adriaen van Ostade, all dating from the first half of the 1640s. All these interiors are characterised by a monochrome colour scheme and a strong chiaroscuro, which reveal influence from Rembrandt and his school in Amsterdam.

More from Old Masters & 19th Century Art - including Dutch Impressionism.
