Lizzy Ansingh (1875-1959), who had just moved in with Schwartze at the Prinsengracht, mentions seeing Toewater climb the stairs on his way to a sitting for the portrait. Schwartze was awarded a Gold Medal (Grooten Gouden Medaille van den Koning Willem III) for this painting at the 1881 Levende Meesters exhibition.
