Lot Essay

This handsome table shares a column with five models in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books: folios 3112 (July 1821), 3144 (March 1822), 3147 (April 1822), 3385 (November 1824) and 3551 (October 1826). Details of the carved paw feet in these sketches are not easy to make out, but near-identical shell-carved feet can be seen on a Regency library table almost certainly supplied by Gillows to Lord Brownlow which sold in Christie's Belton House sale, 30 April- 2 May 1984, lot 88.
