Lot Essay

Pauline Billie Graves, was born in London in 1924 and brought up in Putney. She married Squadron Leader Vernon Jarvis D.F.C. in 1944. After he was killed in action in 1945, she married Squadron Leader Michael Adrian Graves D.F.C. in 1947. He tragically died test flying planes for Westlands in Yeovil 1949. Pauline then married Alan Pegler, a businessman and railway enthusiast, who bought The Flying Scotsman, in 1956. He comissioned this portrait in 1960, at a cost of one thousand guineas. They were divorced in 1964. Pauline lived the last years of her life in Whitsatable, Kent.
