Lot Essay

The present work was part of Moore's disbanded Prométhée sketchbook, executed in 1949-1950. Moore was asked in December 1949 to illustrate Goethe's Prometheus in a French translation by André Gide. He started immediately and continued into early 1950.

This work closely relates to Death of Mira (HMF2591), illustrated in A. Garrould (ed.), Henry Moore, Complete Drawings 1940-49, Vol. 3, Aldershot, 2001, AG 50.20, p. 309.
