In 1910 Hart Nibbrig went to the island of Walcheren for the first time. Impressed by the surroundings he bought a piece of land in Zoutelande near the dunes. He had a home built, 'Sandlught', and from that time on the family Hart Nibbrig spent every summer there. Here the artist was inspired to paint many seascapes, beach scenes and dunes. The village of Zoutelande was depicted many times in a pointillist technique. The objective rendering of light in all its forms is the central theme of his landscape paintings. His paintings evoke unlimited space to which emptiness and desolation are essential. One constant factor is the height of his view point, whether it be the hills in the south of Limburg, the mountains in Algeria or the dunes in Zoutelande. In the paintings of Zoutelande the serene peace of clear, windless days emerges most emphatically. (D. Coolen a.o. Hart Nibbrig, Zwolle 1996, p.143).
