Lot Essay

This bust-length portrait derives from the lost full-length image of the King by Holbein, which was part of a mural for Whitehall Palace executed in 1536-7. Later destroyed, the design of the mural is known from the surviving left-hand section of the artist's original cartoon (London, National Portrait Gallery) and from a 17th century copy made for King Charles II by Remegius Leemput (The Royal Collection). This bust-length portrait is particularly close in detail to a full-length copy of the Whitehall type in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, which has been attributed to Hans Eworth.
