According to P.T. Nicholson and I. Shaw, eds. (Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technology, pp. 60-61), this sedimentary stone, called tuffaceous limestone, consists of "pyroclastic debris thrown into the air by a volcanic explosion and accumulating in air-fall or water-laid deposits." The ancient quarry, which lies in the eastern desert near Wadi Mellaha, at a latitude between Cairo and Luxor, was discovered in 1994.
