MANNER OF THE KLEOPHRADES PAINTER, CIRCA 500-490 B.C.
The obverse with Dionysos standing at the center between a maenad and a satyr, the god clad in a himation over an ankle-length chiton, moving to the right and looking back, a kantharos in his raised left hand, vines issuing forth from his right hand, the maenad moving right, clad in a himation over an ankle-length chiton, her left hand raised, the satyr to the right, depicted nude, moving to the left and looking back, his left arm raised to his head, a wineskin in his lowered right; the reverse with a maenad revelling between two satyrs, the satyrs holding attributes, perhaps krotala; tongues on the shoulders, palmettes on the neck, rays above the foot, ivy leaves below the handle, a graffito on the underside of the foot, details in added white and red; together with an ancient pottery sherd with which it has been accompanied, inscribed in pencil: "Mykenos 15 April [18]93"

Harry Harmon Chamberlin (1873-1951), American historian, journalist, and Harvard University professor, acquired in Europe and brought to the U.S. in the late 19th century; thence by descent.
