A FRAGMENT OF A NOTED BREVIARY IN BENEVENTAN MINUSCULE, in Latin, MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[southern Italy, 12th century]
144 x 264 mm. A fragment with part of 14 lines of text in 2 columns, written in Beneventan minuscule in brown ink, rubrics in red (cropped on all sides, some staining). In a modern cloth binding. Provenance: (a) 16th-century inscriptions in Italian on the recto, including a recipe to stimulate hair growth and an enthusiastic appreciation of an early version of mini-golf: 'In tutto il mondo non si trova piu dilettevol gioco della fossetta'. (b) A 17th-century inscription on the verso reads 'A Maistre Eloy Hemery de Bretagne, Verum est'. (c) MARK LANSBURGH.
The text on the recto opens with Gregory's Homily on the Gospels (XL): 'Myrrham offerimus, si carnis vitia per abstinentiam mortificamus', followed by noted antiphons 'Ad B[enedictus]' or 'Ad M[agnificat]'. The verso opens with music for the Feast of the Epiphany: '[Videntes] stellam magi gavisi sunt gaudio magno'.
