Alma Mahler's affair with Werfel had begun in the autumn of 1917, in the absence of her husband, Walter Gropius, at the Western front, and a son, Martin Gropius, was born prematurely in August 1918. Although Gropius and Alma divorced in 1920, she and Werfel were not to marry until 1929.
