EL LISSITZKY (1890-1941). Raboche-Krest'ianskaia Krasnaia Armiia. [Red Army of Workers and Peasants.] Edited by Fedor Rodinov. Moscow: OGIZ-IZOGIZ, 1934.
Oblong 2° (300 x 350mm). Illustrated throughout with black and white and tinted photographs and photomontages, one of these a 4-page fold-out. (The fold-out detached and with short clean tears at the folds, the text with occasional light marginal soiling, a few short tears, the portrait of Vasily Blyukher lightly defaced as often.) Original dark blue cloth, the front cover stamped in blind with the image of a tank and lettered in gilt, and original gilt-stamped integral folding cloth slipcase (cloth with some soiling and some wear, the chemise with one fold split but holding).
FIRST EDITION. The rarer variant binding with the integral slipcase which folds into a stand, and with the lettering on the upper cover printed in gilt. This variant is also taller, with wider margins. Red Army includes one of Lissitzky's boldest and best-known propaganda collages: the large fold-out montage featuring Stalin reviewing his troops, all set within the red star. 'It is a book version of one of those memorable May Day parades' (The Photobook). The fold-out in this copy is slightly shorter, and may have been supplied from the regular variant. Paradnaia kniga strany sovetov, pp. 163-169; MoMA, The Russian Avant-Garde Book, 1044; The Photobook, vol. I, pp.170-173.
