The Raphael decorations in the Vatican's three-storied balconies known as the 'Logge' quickly became famous, and various suites of plates were issued in the 17th century. However 'the present work was the first to attempt to show all the decoration of the pilasters and pillars' (RIBA). A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Brunet IV, 1110; Berlin Kat. 4068; RIBA III, 2710.
