A MINIATURE CINNABAR LACQUER 'BEGONIA AND PEONY' BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY
The small circular cover is carved with branches bearing begonia blossoms and leaves, the sides with a band of keyfret. The underside of the box is carved with a spray of peony bloom. The interior is lacquered black.
1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box

A Japanese tea master from Kyushu, acquired in the 1960s or before
