[BRITISH ARCHITECTURE.] -- THE SOCIETY OF THE DILETTANTI. (Created December 1734.) Ionian Antiquities. London: Spilsbury and Haskell, 1769.
2o (570 x 375 mm). 27 engraved plates, 5 head-pieces and 3-tail-pieces (some dampstaining to later plates, one or two spots). Contemporary quarter sheep, marbled boards, uncut (front cover detached, worn with loss). Provenance: Harold Douthit (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE without chapter 4 which contains 5 plates. This is the first volume of the Society's series Antiquities of Ionia which eventually stretched to five volumes (six if you include the enlarged re-issue of volume one in 1785) published over 136 years. "In the year 1734, some Gentlemen who had traveled in Italy, desirous of encouraging, at home, a Taste for those objects which had contributed so much to their Entertainment abroad, formed themselves into a Society, under the Name of the DILETTANTI; and agreed upon such Regulation as they thought necessary to keep up the Spirit of their Scheme" (from "To the Reader" page [1]). (Engraved title-page torn with minor loss to the fore-edge, preliminaries with a dampstain in the lower gutter affecting the images). Modern half calf antique.
