Titles printed in red and black, each volume EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED by the addition of 3 frontispieces comprising one original watercolor and 2 plates, most hand-colored, numerous wood engravings in the text, many full-page, woodcut ornamental initials and ONE-PAGE ALS SIGNED BY SCOTT (see below). Publisher's polished autumn leaf morocco, covers with a gilt thorn branch border with gilt thistle plants at corners, the flowers in onlaid purple morocco, Scott's gilt and onlaid purple morocco arms at centers of covers, spines in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, two gilt-lettered, the remainder with similar gilt and onlaid thistle design, turn-ins gilt, white morocco doublures with Scott's arms as on covers, crimson watered silk liners, gilt edges.
