Lot Essay

On the basis of a photograph, Susanna Caviglia has questioned the attribution to Natoire. Jas de Bouffan was Paul Cézanne’s family home on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence and where the artist worked for four decades. The Corsi family bought the estate, with the studio of Cézanne almost untouched, directly from the painter on his mother’s death. It is unclear as to whether this picture was part of the original decoration for Jas de Bouffan, or if it came from the Corsi family.
