Lot Essay

According to Tuke's diary this picture was painted on 4th March 1924 on an uninhabited island off Glover's Reef, near Belize. Tuke travelled there from England with Frederick Mitchell and this is a rare watercolour of a visiting Western boy, Philip Leslie. Tuke usually employed local Caribbean boys and girls as his main models on this trip.
We are grateful to Catherine Wallace for preparing this catalogue entry.
