THE GOOD DOCTOR'S CELLAR
Once again it's a pleasure to present further selections from a truly unique collection, the Good Doctor's Cellar. Last month was all about Burgundy and Christie's was very happy to highlight some of the finest producers and vintages from the Doctor's cellar. The rest of France, and indeed the world, gets the glory this time around. As I mentioned in the introduction to October's selection, the Good Doctor knows what he's about: namely the greatest producers and their finest accomplishments and vintages. Verticals and horizontals, the most fascinating ways to explore a wine or a vintage over time, are the name of the game in this sale and they're truly some of the finest we've ever come across. A number of happy coincidences led him and his wife to begin their serious collecting with the 1982 vintage and they haven't looked back sincewith the exception of back to vintages like '61, '59, '53, '49 and '47. Provenance has long been a point of pride for the owner of this cellar and he has maintained a meticulous record of the wines purchased at auction and at retail throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Many bottles still bear their original lot tags and lot descriptions from the catalogs of their sale, oftentimes in the form of the actual catalog clipping taped to the back of the bottle. As you'll note as you read through the catalog descriptions, the bottles have excellent fill levels. This was always the Doctor's priority. Please expect a degree of bin soiling appropriate for bottles of this nature.
